Well good to see sum astronomy work in pakistan..i think u shud be tryin to set up a larger telescope...like the ones in hawaii named keck and keck 2....these kind of telescope are usually located on higher grounds... ofcourse its going to be costly but u can have someone to sponsor this project. thumbs up!! hey! you people are doing a great job but you should try to turn the amateur astronomers in our country to professional astronomers. we have a glorious history of astronomy. all the notable astronomers were Muslims and why can;t be today. you people should promote your society. 'cause people think that there's no scope for astronomy in Pakistan and hesitate to take interest in this field so promote your society by advertising or by any other means to succeed further and we hope we will soon have an astronomical observatory of our own.there's a beautiful saying: hitch your wagon to the stars. Great Innitiative but i gotta say that much more needs to be done.... please let me know which star in the most prominent in the night sky over karachi... what stars do we need to look at.... at what time of the year.... i know Orion belt.... so i watch those stars.... as of tonight.... Dec. 15 2009 .... after some rain the night sky is " gorigorgeous " and very clear.... i know there is tons of stuff on wat to look in the night sky on google and youtube... but wat I wanna know is wat to look over karachi at wat time of the night and season.... Next biggest and the most important Question is .... "is there any meet up of karachi astronomers" for a coffee or may be at sea view... i sometimes go to seaview at night and the sky along the occean is just tooo attractive to leave.... i hope we can have a meet up at sea view some time so that all the share their stories... folk stories.... knowledge... and learn and inspire from each other... Thanks a bunch .... Muhammad Ali Email: m22ali@hotmail.com Posted by Muhammad Ali

Re: Astronomy in Pakistan Pakistani astronomy stands little chance of flourishing if we let the already scarce telescopes and astronomical optics sit in cardboard boxes and never get to focus on the stars! |

what about scope of astronomy in pakistan? its pleasure to see a platform to discuss astro,it seems that it will take a lot of time in establishment of astro in pak.and being practical, what do you ppl say about the scope of this field in pakistan in near future,? Posted by farwa

Re: what about scope of astronomy in pakistan? Thank you for your interest Ms. Farwa. I speak on the basis of my fifteen years as a Pakistani astronomer that there's a lot of fascination about astronomy in our country. By a lot I mean a lot - no exaggeration here. It's just that until a few years ago, astronomy enthusiasts were scattered and everyone thought (s)he was the only astro-buff around. Now thanks to the internet, the local astronomy community is coming together and flourishing both in numbers as well as experience and equipment Masha Allah. There are currently at least four Pakistani scopes in the 14"-18" aperture league besides instruments dedicated to solar and planetary studies as well as some top-notch astrophotography gear. During the past six months, the astronomers in Karachi alone have organized four dark sky events Alhamdulillah. More than a dozen outreach programs have been organized in various locations across the country in 2009 and 2010. Astronomy groups in other countries are now inviting us to their regional events. Local institutions have been offering degrees related to space sciences. From first hand experience, this is what I can "say about the scope of this field in Pakistan in the near future": it's going to be an awesome ride Insha Allah. Never before has Pakistani astronomy been so exciting. All praise be for Allah Pak. Anyone who's interested can become a part of the community and share the fun. Clear skies. Posted by Zain Ahmed on 19 June 2010

Really nice to hear that, Zain. But can you tell me more on the institutes that are offering space studies? I would love to review some of them. Clear skies! Posted by Safwan Ramzan

Sure. Please register on the forums at www.kaasts.com. I have written an article about it which I'll upload there shortly so that we can have an organized and searchable record of the discussion. Posted by Zain Ahmed on 5 July 2010

I've already got myself registered there. Hope to find that article up on the forums soon. cheers! Posted by Safwan Ramzan

astrophysics isnt taken very seriously by many people in pakistan. plz hold a telescope making competition at high school level and urge schools such as karachi grammar, city, st. patrick's , generation's and beacon house to participate Posted by Seher
|
|
Re: Seher Telescope designing competition in schools is a very attractive idea. I will have a word with the team of Karachi Astronomers Society and the astronomers in Quetta to get a feedback on the feasability of this idea. I am myself based outside Pakistan but my astronomer colleagues are very active and always looking for new ideas. Posted by Akbar

Re: Aamir Aamir: It depends what you are exactly looking for. You can always find small binoculars from camera and electronic markets in Pakistan. Every now and then, some small astronomical telescope pops in these markets, but mostly at very high price. My idea is to attempt making your own scope while keep looking for some useful stuff in Karachi Saddar market. There is always some interesting thing you can find in Shershah scrap market. Buy Telescopes in Pakistan For all those who want to purchase good telescopes in pakistan, I have searched an online shopping store in Pakistan that offers Celestron and Meade telescopes in Pakistan from their store in USA. That is "homeshopping.pk" go to this url and search telescope. You will find a no. of items with prices in Pakistani Rupees. Try it! Posted by Engineer Khan

Re: Buy Telescopes in Pakistan Thank you Mr. Khan. We have been aware of homeshopping.pk since long, but we do not recommend it to anyone. The telescopes for sale on the site are all low quality stuff at ridiculously high prices. Nevertheless, we appreciate your willingness to try to help fellow enthusiasts. Re: Buy Telescopes in Pakistan Thanks, Mr. Zain Ahmed for appreciation. Yes you are right about low quality of the telescopes offered on homeshopping.pk previousely. But, have you checked it recently? Because, now they are also advertising some famous brands on their site. Like The Meade ETX-80AT for Rs. 70K, Celestron AstroMaster 130 EQ for Rs. 42K, Celestron Nexstar 114mm Go-To Reflector Telescope for Rs. 43K, Celestron PowerSeeker Telescope 127EQ for Rs. 32K, and Celestron First Scope Telescope for Rs. 15K. Please, check this url and then enlighten us with your expert advice, whether one may go for any of these telescopes at the offered prices or not? Posted by Engineer Khan

A Very Good Astronomy Software Hi, Mates, A very good software which you may use to locate heavenly bodies in the night skies according to your location is Stellarium. Its an open source software so its free. The latest version available is 0.10.6.1. You can set your own location by selecting your city or by adding your location by longitude and latitude. This is very useful software to supplement your Binocular or telescope, because with this you may locate or identify celestial objects and then may explore them with you optical instrument. Promotion of astronomy there are too many underground astronomers who are gazing the sky, one should start a membership so that people can become member of the association and we can arrange a get together at beaches and other places where we can find clear sky and can explore the sky together, this will not only help junior astronomers like me but will also help promote this association Posted by qazibasit

Need Help I am in Lahore and If anyone is from there, can you please tell me from where can I buy a nice telescope My budget is 10 to 15 thousand I already have an amateur binocular inherited from my grandfather but it is not much good for celestial viewing. I have favourited a celestron telescope on the internet but I am a little cautious when ordering online and I want to see some in person Please Help me Posted by Muhammad Usama

Space Game For those who love astronomy there is a simulator available for free on the internet called Orbiter 2010 i have heard that NASA is using that simulator to train its employees Posted by Muhammad Usama
|
|
Re: Need Help (Muhammad Usama) Feb 10, 2011 Sorry for late reply. My idea is that you can make a better telescope yourself in that budget than you would find anything useful in 10-15000 rupees in Pakistan for astronomy. Many people have constructed their own telescopes in our country and the outcome is extremely encouraging. Try one. I will still vote for a 50mm binocular if you can purchase it within 15000 rupees in Pakistan. Posted by M. Akbar Hussain

Suggestions for the Future I am delighted to see that there is an amateur astronomers society here in Pakistan. I myself have always held a fascination with astronomy since I was a child but never gave myself the chance, till now, to explore this interest. I think what may benefit astronomy in Pakistan is to organize a small conference to start with and choose people within the society to make presentations. And finally my congratulations to the organizers of this great group! Posted by aamir masood

Re: Syra and Irfan @Syra: Purchasing a usable astronomical telescope is a big problem in Pakistan. Small size astronomical telescopes keep on popping up at times in electronic market in Saddar Karachi but these are very costly and are not of good quality. Visit Karachi Astronomers Society website (www.kaasts.com). One of our members was looking fwd to sell out a small but good quality telescope. I don't know if it is still available. @Muhammad Irfan: Thank you for the appreciation. If you come over to Karachi, our team at Karachi Astronomers Society (www.kaasts.com) would be delighted for you to join. In the UK there are many astronomy equipment retailers. I had purchased equipment from Rothervalley Optics in Kiveton, Widescreen Centre in London and also Scopes'n'skies.com in recent years. You can find many more over internet or at least one nearby your residence hopefully. Wishing you clear skies in UK :-) Posted by Akbar
