Thanks everyone for appreciation I would like to thank all who visited my website and encouraged me. Pakistan Amateur Astronomers Society is at the dawn of its mission, and has a long way to go. We started with a vision with only a handful of resources and people. Astronomers from other parts of Pakistan have just started to join the team. And I am specially thankful for people appreciating me from around the globe. I get most of my responses as email at my address mentioned in Contact Us section of astronomer.bravehost.com Posted by Muhammad Akbar Hussain

Let's go (star) party! Dated:30/10/2007; 08:52 pm It's a wonderful feeling to know we have such work starting in our country. These days (nights, actually!) Comet Holmes is a great sight, and the often-crystal-clear nights of winter are almost around. So is it possible that we could please have a star party at your society sometime soon? I and some friends have always longed to peep at the night-sky through a telescope's eyepiece. You could provide us that chance. I am nevertheless thankful to you for what you are doing. Having sent you a detailed email in the morning today, I have checked my inbox no less than a half-dozen times to find a reply from you. So PLEASE... Finally, good luck with the building of your new instrument. Posted by Zain Ahmed

I remember seeing the twin-tailed Hale-Bopp, though I was about 10 years old then. After a long pause, a comet is finally putting up a performance - Comet Holmes. So will your society please, please, please, please, please organize a viewing night with the telescopes. I dare say no big arrangements will be needed; you tell us the date and the place, we'll Insha Allah take care of the rest. Salutes to you all! 31/10/2007 Posted by Comet Crazy

Astronomy in Pakistan I am amateur astronomer from Pakistan. I am always happy to see a fellow astronomer from Pakistan. I have created a website which contains links to nearly all the resources I could find on web related to astronomy in Pakistan including yours. http://www.justvb.net/astronomy/ Posted by Saqib

Thank you Thank you Saqib for your effort in bringing together the astronomy resources in Pakistan. Why you gave up telescope making? In a country like Pakistan where commercially made telescopes are hardly, if ever, available, telescope making is a the only solution for the sake of astronomy. I would advise you to keep on trying. I don't know of any place where you can buy a good astronomical telescope suitable for the needs of an amateur astronomer. There are few camera shops that often display small telescopes but they are not very good. You can begin with binoculars. They are good starting tools. Posted by Muhammad Akbar Hussain

Re: Lunar Eclipse- Pasha Interesting question. If someone stands on Moon during a Lunar eclipse with Earth in between Moon and Sun, the scene would be even more spectacular than Total Solar Eclipse on Earth. Earth has a thick atmosphere and from Moon during a Lunar Eclipse with Sun behind Earth, the Earth's atmosphere would seem to glow like a bright ring of fire. Its light may be responsible for the red tinge of Moon during lunar eclipse. Imagine this beautiful phenomena and enjoy. Posted by Muhammad Akbar Hussain

Re: beginner In this part of the year, I think the three stars you are talking about are of the "belt" of Orion Constellation. These are Zeta Orioni (Alnitak), Epsilon Orionis (Alnilam) and Delta Orionis (Mintaka). When I was a teenager, I used to roam about in Urdu Bazaar(Karachi) and Khore Garden (near Memon Masjid, Karachi) looking for astronomy magazines. I think you can still find astronomy books and magazines there. I also used to get books from Taimuriya Library (North Nazimabad, Karachi). I did not have access to internet those days (there was no internet then!). Now you can do useful search gathering latest knowledge of astronomy over internet. I think that is the most efficient option. Good luck (And remember, we all are beginners) Posted by Muhamamd Akbar Hussain

Re: beginner The three stars form the belt of Orion, exactly as Akbar bhai has written. This beautiful constellation can be seen in the East right after it gets dark. A friend Imran Rasheed recently took this shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24619692@N07/3227569743/ If you look straight up around 10pm these nights, you'll see Orion almost overhead, not 'lying' down as in the above image, but 'standing' erect. You'll find it easy to identify the other bright stars that make up the constellation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Orion_3008_huge.jpg Let us know of your observations. Clear skies. Re: beginner Again, as Akbar bhai has pointed out, Khori Garden is the place to go in Karachi. At J. Fahim Book Center, Shop # 16, KMC Market, I hope you can find [if the one of the other guys I told about it didn't get away with the last edition!] the book "Practical Skywatching". Not only is it great reading, you can also use its star-charts to explore the heavens on your own. Good luck. Posted by Zain Ahmed on 29/01/09

Re: Constellations http://flickr.com/photos/31412078@N06/2980428149/ Once you have located Orion, you might want to scan the sky around it. If you look towards the South-East below Orion around 10pm-11pm, you'll see a very bright star. That's Sirius, the brightest in the whole sky. You might also be able to make out the constellation of which it is a part, Canis Major. You can see this constellation in the above pic I shot in October last year. Posted by Zain Ahmed on 29/01/09

Re: Where to buy telescopes (from)? A guy named Ali [grey_clouds10@yahoo.com] who lives in Lahore sent us this email: "hi guyz i am selling my refractor 80/500 for 6 thousand.it comes with two eyepiece 25mm and 9mm in 1.25" and a 3barlow lense." Re: Where to buy telescopes (from)? Again, buy this only if you know what you're paying for. You can negotiate on the price. Last I heard, this shop has two such scopes for sale. Posted by Zain Ahmed on 30/01/09

A 10X50 or a 7X50 under the right conditions will show more, and under dark skies, even the 7X35 will show more: M3, M5, M7, M8, M13, M22, M31, M34, M35 [probably], M36, M37, M39 [not sure], M41, M42, M44, M45 [easily seen with the unaided eye too], M47, M50, M92, NGC 5139, NGC 869 and 884.>>>>> All major planets [including, just barely, Neptune when at its brightest].>>>>> Asteroid 4 Vesta [very easy when at peak brightness] and a few other asteroids. >>>>> Bright comets [including Lulin]. >>>>> Four moons of Jupiter. Black Holes and the level of research conducted in Pakistan While looking through a number of international journals I found a number of astronomers who have not left earth as yet, but I admired their understanding of the universe. A number of them have written on the subject of Black Holes and Neutron stars, but I am hoping to see a Pakistani who is into this research as well. As the latest information about Black Holes and Neutron Stars has changed the way we look at the universe. I wish there will be some astronomers in Pakistan who would take this subject seriously. Is there anyone hearing me out there? Surely ET is, but I wish he would contact me. Posted by Ivan Carmody

The difference between Black Holes and Neutron Stars A Black Hole is region in space where the gravity is so extremely strong that space closes back on itself, not even allowing light to escape, this means that if I, with a spaceship get almost as near as a thousand miles of it, I and my spaceship will get sucked into it with such speed, that the whole spaceship will be squeezed with immense force, reducing everything to a size much smaller than the fullstop at the end of this sentence. Its something like this, that if we squeeze the earth to the size of a golf ball, it will most certainly end up having a much greater gravity, then it will begin to attract any other heavenly body that manages to come near it, and this will also get reduced to an extremely small size thereby increasing its gravity and increasing the mass of the Black Hole. A Neutron Star is an extremely dense collapsed star mostly consisting of Neutrons. A Neutron Star is what remains after a supernova, the explosion of a massive star. In 1572, there appeared in Cassiopeia a Nova so bright that it was visible in daylight. But by 1574, this Supernova had disappeared. This was an extremely massive star which had ultimately come to the end of its life and had exploded. The information about this event has come to us through old records. One day this same fate awaits our sun too, but dont worry it will not happen in our lifetime or our childrens lifetimes, in fact, it cannot be said when will this happen. Posted by Ivan Carmody

Thanks Ivan Thanks Ivan for sharing your knowledge with us. We have no lack of talented people in our country. If government takes interest and gives our youth the same facilities and incentives as in the rest of the world, things would be different. All we can do at this stage is to try whatever we can do at individual level. This is what we are trying to do at Pakistan Amateur Astronomers Society...though with a staggering and slow pace. Hope you can share your ideas with us. Posted by Muhammad Akbar Hussain

A Note of Thanks to Mr Hamza Jamil Pasha Thank you very much Sir for the encouraging comments you have made about my write up on Black Holes and Neutron Stars. I very well could have put in the mathematical stuff related to this research but unfortunately it would confuse the reader of this topic, in fact it would only be jargon to a reader who has never studied astro-physics or astronomy, these little write ups are just to clear out the difference between Black Holes and Neutron Stars. From where to buy a good telescope Its really exciting to buy a telescope, but if you really want to understand this subject well, then I will strongly recomend you to try and make one. when I was in school, in 1982, I built my own telescope, using simple examples described in various good books of astronomy. Yet, I found out that by collecting and testing various lenses, I was able to get the best of results at some times and not so good ones at others. The main thing you need to do in the begining is to get hold of a few bi-convex lenses of various focal lengths and during day light observe at which length do they focus well, (The image will be inverted, as all astronomical telescopes do) then of the same length construct two tubes which can slide one into another, the lenses will have to be fitted to the opposite ends of these two tubes. It will take a bit of practice and steadiness to learn to aim at first, but later you will be able to master the aiming process well. If you wish to get a 120 magnification telescope, then you can easily secure from an optician a weak positive specticle lens six-foot focal length to use for your object glass. Then make your telescope barrel long enough to correspond, and use a lens of six-tenths-inch for the eyepiece. Almost any small magnifying lens of short focus will do for your eyepiece. The next stage wold be to make a tripod to keep the telescope steady, and old photographic tripod would be good enough. Remember it will take a bit of experimentation but the results are well worth the effort. (No gain without pain), this will make you a master in the field even when you have bought a good telescope. I wish you success in your efforts. Posted by Ivan Patrick Carmody

Are there any noises associated with optical images in space. No dear, there are no noises associated with optical images from outer space, as the distances are extremely large and its impossible for sound to travel over such large distances. These sounds may, however, be recorded with the help of radio-telescopes, but these sounds may not be emitted from the body being observed. At times these are known to be distractions emitted off rediation clouds in the way, and quite far from the body being observed. even with the help of radio-telescopes these sounds and their distances have to be well calculated in order to affirm their origin. Thanks again Ivan Thank you for the simple and understandable description of telescope making. It can be very helpful for beginners, especially those interested in making their own instrument. Perhaps the noise she is talking about is the aberration we see in astrophotographs of the sky. (You can see a lot of noise in my own astrophotographs). And I would be pleased to ask you to join the P.A.A.S. team and let us know what you can do for the propagation of Astronomy in Pakistan. If you can post some details about yourself and your work at my email address (akbar260@yahoo.com), I would be greatly thankful. And if you plan to visit London, do let me know beforehand. I am living in Northern Ireland, but I do visit London frequently. Posted by Muhammad Akbar Hussain

Re: Are there any noises associated with optical images in space Ivan, I'm afraid you're confusing audible (sound) noise with generic (signal) noise, which refers to the unwanted disturbance in any signal, be it visible light, radio, electrical etc. The post in question was about signal noise. Still, thanks for the reply. Posted by Zain Ahmed on 07/16/09

Where to study astronomy in Pakistan? I dont know about an astronomical institute in Pakistan, but I know that the best way to study astronomy in Pakistan would be to contact the Astronomical Society of Pakistan and another place, that could be of help would be the British Council in the main cities of Pakistan. I wish this question would prompt the Government to open up such institutes and universities teaching and conducting research in the field of astronomy. Posted by Ivan Patrick Carmody

Re: Meade/Celestron scopes in Pakistan A few small telescopes can be found at some shops in Pakistan. A friend bought a Celestron 60mm refractor from a shop in Karachi and later gave it away. A fellow amateur is selling a used Meade DS2130. Even a 65mm Japanese Mizar refractor was for sale at a shop sometime ago. But you usually do not find larger aperture instruments here. Where to study astronomy? Lets remember one thing. All knowledge is from Allah, therefore He is the best to guide. To learn astronomy follow the guidance given to you in The Quran. It asks you to look into the heavans and He will provide the solutions. So just by starting to map the sky with your naked eye you will begin to develop intuitive knowledge and the materials and resources will come in accordance to your dedication. The Quran is replete with astronomical code. Find it through actively searching for it. Posted by Suddahazai

RE: Meade/Celestron scopes in Pakistan Zee I have posted the same link at amastropak yahoo groups which may help you. Amazon could not be your only option. On cloudy nights website people sell their used scopes that are sometimes way cheaper than new ones. Now, the tough part is that most of them won't ship outside the United states. The link belongs to a company that solves the problem. The company lets you ship your item at their own address, and then forwards your item to you across the globe. http://www.bongous.com/mail_forwarding_individuals.php Now it's your job to talk to them how much they charge for all of that, and how they deal with shipping and duty charges. Good Luck Have big telescopes and clear skies. Posted by Syed Raza

RE: Meade/Celestron scopes in Pakistan Thanks Raza. I didn't know about any such company. If it really works, it may solve a major hurdle for astronomy in Pakistan. Posted by Muhammad Akbar Hussain

RE: Meade/Celestron scopes in Pakistan Thanks Raza. It's just that i am interested in buying a telescope but have absolutely no idea where to start from. Most of the online blogs suggest that one should join astronomy clubs but since there is a real dearth of such clubs here in Pakistan so i am just confused. I have been wishing to own a telescope ever since i was 10 years old :) However let's see how things fare for me. Posted by Zee

RE: Meade/Celestron scopes in Pakistan Zee, if you are in Karachi, you can contact the Karachi Amateur Astronomers Society team from our 'Contact Us' page. We have some fine telescopes and regularly organize trips for sky viewing. We are open for all, general public to astronomy enthusiasts alike. We do not charge and it is entirely free of cost. RE: Meade/Celestron scopes in Pakistan Alternatively you can try making one. Or at least get a good pair of binoculars from any good electronics or cameras market, 50mm or above. Trust me, your passion for astronomy will get a good kick-start with a decent pair of binoculars. Contact Zain Ahmed (check Contact Us page). He is an binocular astronomy 'freak'. Hi, I've been following your website for over a month now, in hopes that i'll be able to attend the next 'open to public' event you host. Unfortunately, I always seem to get the update post its date. If you could open a subscription area in your website, it'd be much easier for people to keep track of your activities and also help your rather compact community grow. I wish you luck, and must tell you that its a wonderful thing you're doing. Posted by Xaenub

RE: (no subject) Thanks for the wishes. Ms. Xaenub Mirza, you can join our mailing list at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/amastropak/ In the future, we plan to have forums integrated into our site as well. Posted by Zain Ahmed on 28/05/10

Newtanian Telescopes Hi everyone, happy to see that it is an astronomy group. If anyone is interested in Telescope making, i am ready to help. You can make a best Newtanian reflecting telescopes of your desired diameter of the mirror. It is interesting and best than to buying and wasting money on ready made telescopes. For example, a 6" reflecting telescope has cost atleast more than 20 thousand, but if you make it yourself, you will spent much less money as compared to it. I am here waiting for someone, searching for a special minded person. Maybe one of you all. Posted by Scientist

Newtonian Telescopes Dear Mohammed Akber Hussain!!! I grind every type of mirror. Parabolic is the basic one used in most of the reflectors.Do you know about PAEK to VALLEY difference? If yes, then u will have definitely known that if peak to valley difference gives the value 69 or less than it, then we dont have need to be figured it for Parabolizing. It will perfectly work excellent as being a Sphere. On the other hand if the value of P-V is nmore than 69, then we have to obviously convert a sphere into parabola which is relatively interesting job for most of the ATMs. For further explanation, you are alwys welcome. I'll feel pleasure to help someone. Thanks Posted by Scientist

Newtonian Telescopes Dear Miss Khan! It will be nice for me to help you in making a telescope yourself. Firstly, let me know which type of Telescope you are going to construct? Is it a Refracting or Reflecting one? My advice is that if you are a very beginner then you should come in the field of lenses before going to grinding a mirror. I mean you should make a refracting telescope first so that you may learn many important things from it. My email address is asadscientist@gmail.co m You can contact everytime. Good Luck. Newtonian Telescopes Scientist: I am excited about the prospect of mirror construction. Yes definitely it will pave our way to make bigger and better telescopes. I will direct you to the forum of Karachi Astronomers Society (www.kaasts.com) where we can do a fruitful discussion about the prospects of constructing our indigenous telescopes and future observatories. See you there. Miss Khan: ...same for you :-) Posted by Muhammad Akbar Hussain

i have been interested in night sky for many years but now i really do want to buy a telescope and use it to see. but i am unaware about the type of telescope that would be good for me. what are the specifications? are there any places in pakistan or do i have to get them from some other country? i live in lahore, but i can purchase from anywhere in pakistan. i also have someone in US and UK. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks. RE: Haider Hasan There are no real dedicated astronomy retailers in Pakistan. However, you can often check the camera equipment shops in bigger cities. They sometimes have small astronomical telescopes. Try good size binoculars, like 35mm or larger. I would highly recommend you to register with Karachi Astronomers Society or Lahore Astronomers Society Posted by Muhammad Akbar Hussain

RE: Haider Hasan Dear Mate, I have located an online shopping store in Pakistan after searching it on google. They are offering telescope of renowned names like Meade and Celestron etc. These range between Rs.14,000 to 70,000. They say that these telescopes will be shipped from the store in USA and require 5-10 working days for delivery anywhere in Pakistan. You can check it yourself by going on this url "homeshopping.pk/" and searching for telescope. Posted by Engineer Khan

new technique SIr i haver been in experiment also to make a good telescope i hve found another way to get a beter magnification using a concave lens in the eye peice. Posted by sulaman
|

Re: new technique (17/02/11) Sulaman: The technique of using the concave lens as eye piece is the method employed by Galileo to make his historic telescope 400 years ago. It has several advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is the smaller tube legth and erect image. The disadvantage is small field of view. But it is great to learn about the telescope making. If you agree, you can email me the pictures of your telescope and details of its construction, and I will publish it on PAAS homepage. new technique teh concave lens is place in front of eye peice not alone this produce a magnified image. the thing you are saying is used in terrestrial binoculars of low magnification. Posted by sulaman

RE: new technique (18/02/11) Good! That seems like an innovation. Is it increasing the field of view, like a zero field lens in eye-pieces? Posted by M. Akbar Hussain

A hope for the future of Astronomy in Pakistan I wish this blog and all these astronomical societies would be made even easier to access for the common man as this subject does spur the imagination. At times I feel that astronomy must be patronised in Pakistan. Posted by Ivan Patrick Carmody

Re: Ivan Patrick Carmody We are trying our best to make that happen. We strongly encourage astronomy enthusiasts to join Karachi Astronomers Society which is our main hub of activities in and around Karachi. We also remain in close liaison with other amateur astronomers organizations in Pakistan. I am currently running this website only as a continuum of an astronomy resource and information portal.
